Exterior Home Painting Northern VA

Paint is your homes first layer of protection against the elements, but it doesn’t last forever. If you haven’t painted your homes exterior for some time then you will have some paint peeling like on this home here. Even if it doesn’t look as dramatic, once you get to pulling and scraping the results can shock you! But have no fears, after it is all peeled off we can prime it and paint it to give you a final product that looks great and will last years.

However, if you wait too long then the wooden trim or siding will start to rot since there’s no longer any paint protecting it from the sun and rain. Once this happens you’ll have to start replacing rotted boards or water will find its way into your home. Luckily for you, Paint The DMV can also help with replacing rotted trim boards and can prime and paint them once they’re up.

Signs My House Needs Painting

A house usually needs to be painted about every five to ten years, but a thorough visual inspection of your house can indicate a need to do it sooner or later. The things you should look for during an inspection include:

  • Cracked and Peeling Paint. This is a sign that the old paint has existed well beyond its life span, and environmental conditions have broken it down to the point where it no longer provides the same type of barrier to protect your home from the elements. Exposed wood is susceptible to moisture, dry rot, and mildew, which will destroy it and lead to costly repairs.

  • Deteriorated Caulk. Caulk is used for sealing the seams around windows, doors, and joints. Over time, caulking dries out and loses its elasticity to keep seams sealed during temperature and weather changes. Damaged caulk also allows moisture to penetrate the wood and is a sign your house needs new caulk and a paint job.

  • Paint is Faded. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can beat the color right out of paint. This will give the color of your house an uneven look between the part that rests in the sun during the day and the section of the house that remains shaded. To restore a full look, you need to repaint the house.

  • Gaps in Boards. As boards dry out, they shrink and create gaps. Paints and/or stains hold in the wood's natural oils that help to prevent shrinking and keep it in good condition.

Paint the DMV is available to provide estimates on inspections in order to identify any problem areas of your home if you are unable to perform an inspection.

In addition to these signs, whenever you are getting ready to sell your home, you will want to make it look its best to get a higher price. A new paint job improves the home's curb appeal to increase its value.

Process of Painting the Exterior of a House

Workers will generally lay tarps around the base of the exterior of the home to protect plants, bushes, and ground cover from spillage. They will also use coverings to protect lighting fixtures and the trim on doors and windows. Once this is done, the exterior house painters will begin a 7-step process to paint the exterior of your home.

  1. Power Washing. The first step is to remove any dirt, tree sap, and other debris from the painted surfaces. This is usually done using a power washer to thoroughly clean the outside.

  2. Repairs. Repairs to wood panels, siding, stucco, and other surfaces will be done by painters before they begin applying any paint.

  3. Scraping. Loose and cracked paint will be removed.

  4. Caulking. Cracked and shrinking caulk around doors, windows, and joints will be removed and a new layer will be applied.

  5. Primer. A coating of primer will be applied to the surface to cover stains and help protect exposed wood.

  6. Paint. The painters will then apply paint to the exterior. Oftentimes, two coats of paint are applied for additional protection.
